SNCF-type signals
Mechanical signals

1. Distant signals

Announcer signal
(Avertissement)

Daytime signal aspect:
Meaning:
Nighttime signal aspect:
Expect stop
(Avertissement fermé (A))

Stop at next signal or buffer.
(Expect) track clear (Voie libre (VL))

Proceed and keep normal speed.

Extended shape

Expect stop
(Avertissement fermé (A))

Stop at next signal or buffer.
Expect reduced speed
(Ralentissement fermé (R))

Next signal cleared to diverging track.
Decrease speed to 30 km/h.
(Expect) track clear (Voie libre (VL))

Proceed and keep normal speed.

Deferred stop signal
(Disque)

Deferred stop (Disque fermé (D))

Proceed on sight, then stop short of the first point (switch)or level crossing. Halt at the station is obligatory.
Expect stop
(Avertissement fermé (A))

Stop at next signal or buffer.
(Expect) track clear (Voie libre (VL))

Proceed and keep normal speed.

2. Stop signals

Block signal
(Sémaphore)

Form №1 (only): block signal of the type BM.

Block stop
(Sémaphore fermé (S))

Track occupied, stop short of the signal.
Passing possible under conditions after complete stop.
Track clear (Voie libre (VL))

Proceed and reach normal speed.

Basic protection signal
(Guidon d'arrêt)

Absolute stop (Guidon d'arrêt fermé)

All movements must stop short of the signal.
Signal off (Guidon d'arrêt ouvert)

No indication.

Simplified protection signal
(Carré violet)

Absolute stop (Carré violet fermé (CV))

All movements must stop short of the signal.
Shunt ahead (Manoeuvre (M))

Trains at stop and trains already
shunting must proceed in shunting movement, not exceeding 30 km/h on track devices.

Trains approaching in normal movement can continue to proceed in the same mode.

Extended protection signal
(Carré)

Absolute stop (Carré fermé (C))

All movements must stop short of the signal.
Track clear (Voie libre (VL))

Proceed and reach normal speed.

Extended shape:

Absolute stop (Carré fermé (C))

All movements must stop short of the signal.
Reduced speed
(Rappel de ralentissement fermé (RR))

Proceed to diverging track,
not exceeding 30 km/h on track devices.
Track clear (Voie libre (VL))

Proceed and reach normal speed.

Extended shape: combined signal

Absolute stop (Carré fermé (C))

All movements must stop short of the signal.
Expect stop
(Avertissement fermé (A))

Stop at next signal or buffer.
Track clear (Voie libre (VL))

Proceed and reach normal speed.

Extended shape: combined signal

This combined signal can show a reduced speed + distant stop aspect.
In that case, the R.S. and D.S. targets must both be taken into account,
and the signal is adjusted not to show both if not necessary.

Absolute stop (Carré fermé (C))

All movements must stop short of the signal.
Expect stop
(Avertissement fermé (A))

Stop at next signal or buffer.
Reduced speed
+ Expect stop
(Rappel de ralentissement + Avertissement fermés (RR+A))

Proceed to diverging track, not exceeding 30 km/h on track devices.
Stop at next signal or buffer.

NB:
this aspect is also used to announce a second signal showing reduced speed.
Reduced speed
(Rappel de ralentissement fermé (RR))

Proceed to diverging track,
not exceeding 30 km/h on track devices.
Track clear (Voie libre (VL))

Proceed and reach normal speed.
